Architecture professionals gained a better understanding of the Identification of Work (IDoW) policy in this SAIBD and SACAP two-part session. After the National President of the SAIBD outlined the policy’s guidelines, he addressed the concerns of professionals on the impact it had on the sector. Videsh Boodu shared the screen with SACAP representative, Ntanganedzeni Makakavhule who presented on the updated code of conduct allowing attendees to walk away with comprehensive updates from such credible organisations.

Accredited by South African Institute for Building Design (SAIBD), this session provided clarification on the recent changes to industry standards and the impact these have on the architecture profession. Such standards include energy efficiency for architects, roof standards, as well as Part A of the National Building Regulations. The presentation was delivered by the National President of SAIBD, Videsh Boodu.

In a two-part session supported and accredited by the South African Institute of Civil Engineering (SAICE), representatives look at the general conditions and project management. The session begins with a presentation by Theunis van Zyl on the significant attributes that differentiate the GCC 2015 from the rest. This is followed by Werner Jerling considering the procurement, project implementation and project management that will improve the outcomes in both construction and localisation.

Accredited by ECSA and supported by ASPASA, this two part session considered concrete and material case studies. Barry Pearce, the founder of Learning Matters Etc, covered aspects of in-house testing, as well as setting up checks and balances with the others parties involved in approving the material once onsite. Later Jaco du Plessis from Go Consult tackled the tough question, how does perfectly good concrete fail? The session was expertly moderated by ASPASA director Nico Pienaar.
Our Programme Director Kelly Jean Easton speaks to architect and urban development specialist, Shaakira Chohan. Being Women’s Month, she highlights some of the trends and developments for female architects and gives her message to those wanting to have a bigger presence in the industry.
Kelly Easton, Programme Director at African Construction Expo speaks to Zanele Mabathoana – Professional Chief Quantity Surveyor at Gauteng Department of Infrastructure – on what it means to be a women in the construction industry. Zanele was the 2018 winner of the Rising Star Award at the annual African Construction Awards, which is Powered by NAFBI. During this interview, she discusses her positive journey as a young woman in a male-dominated industry.
Kelly Easton, Programme Director at African Construction Expo speaks to Charne Karaolis – the Founder and MD of MSHEQ – on what it means to be a women in the construction industry. Charne also discusses how she built her all-female health and safety consultancy and delivers an inspirational message to all women this August. Charne is one of the esteemed judges for the African Construction Awards, which will take place in 2021.
Over a cup of coffee, our editor of Concrete Trends Nicholas McDiarmid discussed the largest mining house in Africa with the director of ASPASA, Nico Pienaar. Lafarge-Holcim came up as a major focal point, following the pivotal services that ASPASA provides. Pienaar also highlighted safety, community engagement as well as regulatory compliance.
Charles Nduku, President of the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP), discusses how the professional organisation is driving transformation in line with the objectives of national government. Being interviewed by Kelly Easton, Programme Director for dmg events, Nduku also touches on the hard-hit architecture profession due to Covid-19 and the procurement measures in place for built environment professionals.
Our event director Tracy-Lee Behr sat down with Nicholas McDiarmid the editor of Concrete Trends to talk about the pivotal relationship between events and media as a force for good during lockdown, as well the insights he has gained from the CEOs, Directors and MDs across the public and private sectors in South African Construction, which all amount to one thing: a call for projects.
