Recognising sustainable development, transformation, technological and digital achievements in the construction industry. The Big 5 Southern Africa Construction Impact Awards have been created to inspire Southern Africa’s construction industry to aim for higher standards and achieve new goals.

Co-located with The Big 5 Construct Southern Africa the Impact Awards is a platform to celebrate the achievements and transformation of the construction industry that go beyond traditional measures of project delivery.

Awards categories

The awards categories explore the business creating the smart communities of the future, how we use technology and digitalisation to enable more sustainable construction practices, as well as honoring organisations driving inclusion and diversity, team collaboration, partnerships, and individual leadership.

DIGITALISATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR

>> Criteria
This category focuses on how digital tools have been successfully implemented on a specific construction project. The award celebrates an organisation that is using technology at the forefront of their projects and are implementing digitalisation in their current project. (Organisation)
- The project must have a strong focus on innovation and digital transformation
- The organisation must demonstrate client and cross-team collaboration, how people were at the heart of the project, project objectives, results, successful use of data and reporting and how any challenges were overcome. The organisation must give evidence of how digitalisation improved the construction project processes and operating model.

RISING STAR

>> Criteria
Recognising young built environment professionals who are shaping the future of construction in Southern Africa today with tremendous dedication and energy. This award provides a platform to unearth and recognise that inspirational and exciting leader of tomorrow (under 40 years of age). (Individual)
- The candidate who is excelling in the construction industry
- The Candidate must have shown success and industry advancement in the last 5 years
- The candidate should be a high achiever and have contributed directly or indirectly to her/his organisation or to the construction industry
- The candidate should have strong communication and interpersonal skills
- The candidate can be an entrepreneur, corporate professional or government official.

EMPOWERMENT & TRANSFORMATION

>> Criteria
Recognising those organisations who have excelled in driving empowerment, transformation, inclusivity and diversity within their organisations and the industry. (Organisation)
- The organisation provides evidence of enhancing and contributing to the training of their staff
- The organisation has gone the extra mile to advance their staff knowledge by way of training
- An extra effort has been made to implement a skills development programme
- The organisation must have contributed successfully to skill development within the built environment
- An organisation that promotes diversity, equity and social inclusion in their own operations.

SUSTAINABLE CITY INITIATIVE

>> Criteria
The Sustainable city initiative award will be awarded to a city that implemented a programme or technology that has incorporated a sustainable outlook.
- A city that has made contribution toward a sustainable urbanization
- The entry must demonstrate that they have gone over and above standards for the built environment and embedded Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into the project.

EXCELLENCE IN MEDIA & COMMUNICATION

>> Criteria
This category will showcase an outstanding media and communication professional who is actively involved in any aspect of communications (PR, editor, journalist, corporate communications) in the built environment (construction, cement and concrete industries). The award seeks to showcase an extraordinary caliber in delivering information and will recognize their unwavering commitment and communications skills. (Individual)
- The candidate must have an extraordinary caliber in delivering information and have an unwavering commitment and communications skills.

SUSTAINABILITY CHAMPION OF THE YEAR

>> Criteria
This award is open to professionals who may or may not have sustainability as part of their formal job description. The award will honour an individual who can show commitment, innovation, and measurable impact on sustainability in their organisation. (Individual)
- The candidate must be a Senior Manager or Director and an ambassador of environmental, social, and economic issues
- The candidate must be a pioneer and role model in their organisation for successfully adopting sustainable practices
- The candidate must demonstrate a successful implementation, showing clear measurements of success, collaboration, and outcomes – including Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles – in their work.

EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP

>> Criteria
This award goes to a candidate who has demonstrated excellent leadership in the workplace and has led others to great development and success in the built environment. (Individual)
- Transformational leadership
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Presents a good image of the organisation (positive work attitude)
- Excellent performance in their work
- The individual that has shown a clear path of initiative and growth within the organisation over the last couple of years by spearheading an idea or project
- The individual should stand for transformational spirit within the construction industry value chain.
- The individual performance should have contributed directly or indirectly to the financial or social-economic performance of the organisation
- The candidate can be an entrepreneur, a corporate professional, youth or a woman with disability.

INDUSTRY PARTNER OF THE YEAR

>> Criteria
Celebrating associations and construction bodies who promote empowerment, collaboration and economic growth within the built environment. (Organisation)
- The organisation must have a well-rounded knowledge of the industry
- Supports the industry by promoting empowerment, collaboration and economic growth
- The organisation must represent their members by addressing difficult issues at high level engagements
- The organisation must be solution driven and making a real change in the industry

LEADING TECHNOLOGY

>> Criteria
The award is open to organisations (non-technology providers) who can show how they have used technology to improve processes and efficiency, while engaging teams and/or clients in technology. Organisations should provide evidence of the pain points that the technology has solved, data driven decision making, specific innovations, improvements in business and/or project performance, competitive advantage, benefits, and any potential to disrupt the wider industry. (Organisation)
- The organisation should provide evidence of how the business case for the technology was developed, data driven decision making, specific innovations, improvements in business and/or project performance, competitive advantage, benefits, and any potential to disrupt the wider industry.

WOMAN OF THE YEAR

>> Criteria
Recognizing a woman in the built environment with outstanding efforts and enduring contribution to the concrete, cement and construction industry. This award may only be won once by a member. (Individual)
- The candidate shows determination and skill to advance within her field and at the same time promoting and highlighting the contribution of women in the industry
- The candidate that has mentored and encourage women to build careers in the built environment and is a champion of women in the industry
- The candidate that has be imparting skills and knowledge to other women
