SMART TALKS
Can technology and innovation bring about the quantum leap that is needed to turn healthcare around in South Africa?
Speaker: Ms Phumelele Makatini,
Chief Executive Officer, The Building and Construction Industry Medical Aid Fund (BCIMA)
- The pandemic set in motion a technological revolution, the likes of which have been unparalleled. These fortuitous consequences will serve us well in times to come.
- We’ve all talked a great deal about the Fourth Industrial Revolution but we need to take cognisance of the Fifth Industrial Revolution which could manifest itself as a crisis of trust in technology. For example, are we using technology for the greater good of the world?
- When it comes to changing the face of healthcare in our own country innovation, technology, human intuition and problem-solving capabilities will be an unbeatable combination and may well be the very thing that is needed to turn healthcare around in South Africa.
- The advent of COVID-19 has changed the face of healthcare and indeed how we communicate. It is the beginning of a new era for the management of our health and how we interact with our healthcare professionals going forward. This comes down to innovating and creating solutions that ultimately hinge on so much more than convenience – it is about making inroads into inclusivity, sustainability and connectivity for South Africans and beyond.
- As challenging as this may sound, we as individuals and business leaders must recognise and harness the opportunities that innovation and technology afford us – not only in the construction and healthcare industries but in each and every sphere of business. We need to embrace technology, digitisation and innovation. It is in our hands.
